Dr. Rabkin’s Tips for Minimizing Bruising and Swelling after Botox and Fillers

botox fillers swelling

When it comes to bruising and swelling after injectables, there are things that you can do to help prevent and minimize these undesirable, albeit temporary and common, side effects.

  1. Avoid taking Aspirin or Ibuprofen a week before your treatment.  Make sure to check with your doctor if you take those for high blood pressure or heart disease.

  2. Stop taking Vitamin E, Garlic, Fish Oil or Ginkgo Biloba for a week prior to as these can also increase the risk of bruising.  Consider taking Homeopathic Arnica tablets a few days before your appointment.

  3. It is generally a good idea to avoid heavy aerobic exercise on the day of your treatment.  As blood flow to the tissue increases, so are your chances to of bruising even by the most expert injector.

  4. Most dermal fillers are comprised of Hyaluronic Acid, which pools water to the area, particularly right after injection.  I recommend refraining from exercising for 24-48 hours after treatment with dermal fillers.  This minimizes the risk of excessive swelling and bruising, which can occur if small blood vessels rapture during heavy physical activity.  Avoiding saunas, steam rooms and jacuzzis is also a good idea.

  5. Avoid flying for 2-7 days after filler or Botox injection, as cabin pressure changes may affect how the filler settles and may prolong any ill effects.

  6. Finally, applying a cool compress (not ice cubes) immediately at the injection sites can be very effective method to reduce swelling.

Another celeb favorite is a facial that uses a mild electrical current directed at exercising the muscles of the face, whipping it into a firmer version of itself. Still others swear by a series of 2-3 Microdermabrasions a few weeks apart to refresh the skin pre-event.

To Sparkle: A bright and beautiful smile definitely enhances one’s youthful and vibrant appearance.  “Two of the most frequently used procedures for enhancing a celeb’s smile are Bleaching and Dental Veneers.” says Dr. Janys Gelberg, a cosmetic dentist in Englewood, NJ. Bleaching is a quickfix and an effective way of improving the color of one’s teeth. This can be done in the doctor’s office in a single visit or with the use of take home kits that require several applications.  For a more long lasting effect, others choose Porcelain Veneers.  Dental veneers require treatment by an experienced cosmetic dentist and can be completed in two office visits.

To Seal the Deal: Celebs are also subject to flashing lights and long hours under the scrutiny of cameras during a red carpet event.  One of the secrets of flawless looking makeup, says pro make up artist Karlene, is to mix.  This offers coverage with a dewy fresh glow. Another trick is to spray a moisturizing mist, like MAC Fix Plus, all over the face to refresh and rehydrate the makeup, so it does not appear cakey and dry.

So the next time you are called to attend a red carpet event, or just want to look fabulous for a party, know that achieving that look of perfection is possible, affordable and within your reach.  We recommend a visit at least 4 Weeks prior to your big day so we can analyze your needs and get you on a schedule to look your best.
